which photoshop?

I am going to be getting a new version of photoshop and I have no idea which one to get. I am using my alien ware again as well as my other comp that has Photoshop 7(yes its old lol) I would love something free thats better then gimp but I know thats not happening.

So what version should I get?

Um, no I have idea about pros & cons of various versions, as it's been a long time since I've used anything different, but personally I have CS2.  It does....everything you see me do.  XD

I've tried out newer Photoshop versions a couple of times but I always go back to Photoshop 7. I don't think I gave them a fair chance, though. I just like 7. >.<

I'm not sure if it's better than gimp but I certainly find it more useable. I never really managed to get the hang of how everything in gimp works, whereas I find FireAlpaca fairly intuitive.

i use CS6, but i used PS7 for years.  The only reason i have CS6 is because i bought my new Macbook used and she came pre-loaded with a lot of software.

I might go with the cs2 it's cheaper lol I would keep my 7 but the comp I want it on doesn't have a cd drive even if I had the cd and I also lost my code

I have cs3 and love it. I'd die for cs6, I've seen it used by my instructed before, but cs3 does me well. I also have sai. Ever since cs3, I can never go back to photoshop 7
