Ok I need some help peoples.  I have this pretty draft and he needs a mate


I have aquired a golden tag in a trade for a puppy so I am looking for some tips on what to get.  He is a dappled bay with sabino, so what woudl be a good breeding combo with him to produce what possibly?  If you don't know no worries, I wouldn't know either, cause I know Nothing XD

and when you have a horse that looks all solid, can it still produce babies with markings when paired with somethign that shows markings?  or maybe one that does not?  I just wonder if I got a custom and it was all black (just an example) woudl it have genes that may just be hidden?

I strongly suggest that you don't get another overo (frame, sabino, or splash), as that has a 25% chance of being lethal regarding the foal.

Perhaps a tobiano paint? That would open up a lot of nice possibilites in the offspring

I am not too sure about this one, it says buckskin Tobiano.  Not too sure what the bay and Buckskin would produce?

Ok so if I understand correctly for it to be tobiano it must have:
A face marking in white
four white legs
and two colors of hair

I keep finding some that say tobiano but don't seem to meet these requirements so I am all confused, but this is what I was told on a website, I wonder if I can find the link again.

Bay x Buckskin could definitely produce Bays and Buckskins.  If both parents carried Chestnut, then you could also get Chestnut and Palomino foals.

I would call both of those tobiano The "pawprints" (little spots, a bit Appaloosa-ish) on both of the coats also indicate that they are homozygous, which means they will always throw tobiano foals.

ok, that is nice to know too.  hmmmm maybe use one of those for a light and find plain tobiano for my draft.  with all this new info I am thinking a little harder, this is kinda fun

Oh my goodness, that third horse is crazy XD But, hey, it's a real horse, so I have no problem with it I would probably code it as chestnut (liver mixed with a lighter shade, more specifically, but genetically just chestnut) -- if that's okay with you?

I was expecting appy to show up as well, I had been reading and I found that horses with really big blankets like mine are usually homozygous. I assume that information was wrong? I also found somewhere that if there are no or almost no spots on the blanket that it is homozygous, is there any truth in that?

Hmm... I hadn't heard that before. I did some research, and came across this site:

It doesn't confirm what you said, but it does imply that Appaloosa is a more simple gene, with homozygous showing as few spot or snowcap, and with heterozygous showing as varnish, blanket, or leopard. I actually have it as two genes, with NN showing whether any Appaloosa is present, and LL determining what variety. I've coded enough Appies that I'll have to stick with my genes, though... Just turn to the site's genetics page if necesary. This is honestly news to me; I think they're still in the process of mapping the Appaloosa gene, actually.

I thought that maybe it could still play a part in the dominance of the gene, but I guess not. Oh well, it was worth a shot. I would love a homozygous appy, so if I was right I would have requested a big blanket one with very few or no spots. Just like requesting a tobiano with pawprints. Still no guarantees, I think? But at least it would increase my chances.

Now let's hope I can manage to breed some girls, I need more girls and I keep getting guys xD

YLO, that's funny, since random.org tends to give a pretty even 50/50 split between genders. I guess you are getting all the males and everyone else is getting females XD

I coded him as chestnut, so silver dapple wouldn't be visible (it's only a black base modifier). But like gray horses, chestnuts and solid bays can still have normal dapples, that are just aesthetic and not actually genetic. As an example, here's a dappled chestnut Breyer model:
