If a Chihuahua of both types (long hair and short hair) bred, would a mutt be produced?
Would both varieties of chihuahua be visible in the puppies possibly?

And, for example, if Chinese Cresteds got the powderpuff type of crested, would we be able to breed those together?

I am quite sure the SECOND we get powderpuffs, I'm going to tackle Garney for some. I think powderpuffs will just be amaaaaazing <3 <3 But, of course, no rush. Just plotting for when it happens XD

Chihuahuas both long and short are the same breed. I've bred both long and short and both showed in the puppies.

I image it would be the same for Cresteds

Technically even two short haired chis bred together can produce the random long haired puppy and vice versa.

Ah, I take it the long-hair gene is recessive and can be carried? Interesting.

Someday I want to see the pair of short-haired chis that have an entire litter of long-hairs. The marvel and commotion would be amusing. =)

But if long hair was recessive, then two long hairs would have to produce all long hair puppies. (You know, since in order to show a recessive gene, there would be two recessive allels things and it wouldn't carry any genes for short hair.) Since she said vice versa, I doubt it's recessive. Hmmm. :/

Ah yeah...sorry, long is the recessive gene, so two longs would produce only long...but any other combination would produce a mix possibly, and because we don't do actual genes in the kennel like in the stable then almost certainly you would get a mix unless you specifically asked not to have that when you bred two smooth coats.

Neocridders

Oooh. Ok. That's really good to know. Thank you :D

Keilin Alyr

I know long hair is recessive to short hair in cats, and I figured it would be the same in dogs. Granted, I had heard about odd longhaired Persians giving birth to short-haired kittens, as they've identified a rare, probably mutated, recessive short-hair gene recently.

All things aside, I would have credited the aforementioned vise-versa to Kennel magic. You know, the same magic that gives us red Samoyeds and blue Golden Retrievers. Because darn it, it's more fun that way. =D

There are no genetics, there is only Dice God.

It gets even more complicated with Dachshunds and their three coat varieties.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think in that case wirehair is dominant to smooth, which in turn is dominant to longhair.  I'm glad for you guys' sakes that The Kennel only has the smooth variety at the moment!

Very true. I mostly meant genetics in the rhetorical sense though. =)

Also I'd be careful not to flatter the dice too much. They tend to get ornery when they haven't been paid their proper respects for the umpteenth time a day. Or when they haven't been dropped into the fish tank for rolling natural 1s three times in a row during a crucial combat session:

He's a little blurry, but there's a spotted cory catfish nosing at the d20. They loved playing with errant dice. XD

jojo

Huh. Dropping d20s in the fish tank, I should try that sometime. Then they'd learn their lesson and maybe let me actually HIT something during D&D combat sessions D:

Taruia

Yes, an unfortunate incident with a d20 got me turned into a wererat in my most recent campaign...*glares at die in question*

Keilin Alyr

Heh, tell me about it. Even if letting dice swim with the fishes did nothing for random chance, it made me feel better. XD

Sadly though, the days of dropping ornery dice in the tank are over for us. We adopted a pike cichlid from a former roommate, and I could believe she'd try to gulp down a die. They're smaller than her usual meals. Old drinking glasses and soda cans that were squirreled away from previous game sessions, those are fair game though.

Also:

You knock on the Secundi Council door, and Garney answers.
Dice God says... you lose, nothing for you today.

Not cool, Garney! Not cool! XD
