My husbad just bought me a new bottle of flintstone vitamins (i cant take prenatals and the little squig inside me needs them!) because the last kind i had were so gross i couldnt bear to chew them and swallowing something meant to be chewn is a bad idea do let me tell you.

Anwho i was reading the box for no real reason and i had no clue on this but you can overdose on iron..really now? has anyone ever heard of this? its a leading cause in accidental overdoses for children under 6..i assume thats if they like ate the whole bottle but dang i know a woman who ate the things like candy..seriously like i mean she ate them like you would sweet tarts (she refused sweet tarts when i told her they were better because they had no nutrious value XD)

i assume if a child can overdose an adult could to...its just odd you could overdose on a vitamin

Echowing

Oh, thats pretty bad, I bet you can OD on just about any kind of medicine/vitamin/etc. My friend got all loopy on fever medicine when her mom accidentally gave her too much...     o.o

Tribe

Well i could see on actual medicine overdosing alot of it has sedatives in it which infact when given to much can make you loopy or cause horrid problems otherwise. but i just never guessed something good for you could hurt you like that anyways..

i know very well actually most medicines that seem so simple you can overdose on, i once cause my self liver problems with tylonl & gave my self ulcers with a pain killer that was a little stronger then tylonl but still over the counter.

Vitamins are an interesting thing, you need to have just the right amount in order to be healthy. Too much or too little is just as bad for you. Here is an interesting page on what can happen with each type of overdose.

Reality is only for those who lack imagination.

Urgh... That sounds horrible!  I like the Vitamin C tablet things 'cause they taste good but maybe I should lay off  'em a bit. >.>

I'm pretty safe otherwise though 'cause my dad is a doctor. I just tell him whenever I feel sick and he'll fix me up with something.

Actually it would be surprising if I did manage to OD 'cause my grandpa was a gen. practice doctor, my mom worked in hospital records, and my step-moms a nurse....  Wow, I'm covered on all fronts! xD

I hope you didn't get any permanent problems though. That'd be the worst, trying to get better but instead getting more sick  >:P

I take the maximum dose o iron a day wow, glad i dont take more then that though as i dont think my body could handle any less then that. (just had a baby pregnant with another if i dont get my high dose of iron a day i would kill off at some point)

Echo it says that vitamin c hasnt been proven to cause any sorts of problems.

The only medicine i ever took that really couldve have set me wrong for life was a nasuea medicine. It makes you twitch in high doses which can then become a permant thing and evolves into worse problems. Thank the er for that trip

Oh hey actually i take over the recommended dose, though i dont think i could do without what i take. It was okaied by the doctor. I take like 10 flintstones a day, thats umm lets see i take 150 mg a day it says 100 so i dont think its like im taking tons more then expected lol i just really  need it. I think if i took less id probably fall asleep doing my daily tasks. Before the doctor told me i really badly needed iron id get wore out just doing my make up, i mean like just standing and moving my arms would make me tired, out of breath and make my heart rate rise oddly.

Echowing

Wow, that sounds bad! I guess under those circumstances and if you had a deficiency then it would increase your recommended dosage...

And my Vitamin C is safe, yay! XD

Tribe

deficiency is an understatment. lol. i do WIC and they check your iron when you come in, up until i started the viatimins i was so low theyd send me to the hospital for further evalutation. Now im still low but on a safer side of the fence.

Echowing

Eee, thats pretty scary. Hope it goes up for ya soon.

As a side note, I was accruing an over abundance of iron when I was pregnant.. without taking meds.

The doctor wanted mom and I both on prenatal vitamins.  I couldn't take mine, they kept making me sick.  But everyone around me kept badgering me to take them anyway, for the baby.  Why? if I can't keep them down, whats the point?

The doctor had concerns over my iron level (without ever checking me!) because my mom had low iron (low iron WITH taking the pills).  So he assumed "like mother like daughter" and tried to treat us both the same (we were pregnant at the same time).

At the time, I thought the pills were making me sick because they were vanilla scented/flavored, and vanilla more often then not makes me queasy.  Maybe that was why, maybe it was too much iron, maybe a combination of both.  I don;t know, as I don;t know exactly what my levels were.

I do know, he finally checked my iron levels, and realised that unlike my mom I didn't need any at all.. that I in fact had an over abundance.  Stupid man -.-

First off you doctor prescribing iron without checking your level was horrid. I would probably never go back to him XD but iron does make you sick to your stomach with prenatals because there is so much in one pill thats why i do flintstones with iron plus throughout the day, its easier on me and my stomach. Im even past the whole morning sickness thing and still if i take a prenatal instead i get about 5 mins after the fact and get sick..not fun.

Im one of those weird people who takes about 3X what you're supposed to in a day and feels great. I'm very anemic. If I dont get enough iron, I can't really wake up.Ill spend the whole day just staring into space and not realize it until one of my friends tells me to go take my vitamins, then I pick right up.

Easy way to tell if you are too high/low on iron- listen to your body. Get an iron supliment from a store with just iron in it, so theres no distractions for your body. Open the jar and smell it. If it makes your mouth water, chew a flintstones without fear. If it makes you wanna puke just smelling it, don't take the flintstones. That's just for people who fluctuate and arent sure if they should be taking even the min amount in a day. Never go over recomended dosage unless doc says so, of course.
