Double, Double, Toil, and Trouble


Saturn approaches, pouches and bags on her belt bulging with the various ingredients that are the tricks of her trade. She contemplates the Elenaria mare for a moment, pondering what might be best for this situation.

She starts selecting things.

First, a feather, raven-black and shining with iridescence. "Something dark and mysterious," she speaks, placing it before her.

Second, a bit of shaped silver, its form a twisting ring of leaf and vine. "Combination of the natural world and the world of men, wild beauty shaped with ore."

Third, a red-orange candle. "For fire, which burns and destroys, which lights and guides, which cooks and cleanses."

Fourth, an amethyst point, clear purple and glinting. "For clarity, and some protection against nightmares and what lurks in the dark, for one should never tempt fate too mightily on Halloween," she says with a slight smile.

Fifth... a handful of peanut M&Ms. "Because what would Halloween be without some treats to balance out the tricks?" Saturn says with a wink.

She tosses them all into the cauldron, concentrating of forming the magic to bind them, and waits to see what happens.

For a moment, nothing, and then from the ground sprouts a slender sapling. All at once, it is sturdy but fragile, shining but dark, and living but... somehow, a part of it echoes the undead of All Hallow's Eve. Different sections of branch seem to be made of different materials, and yet it forms a cohesive whole-- a strange thing, mimicking the growth of nature, but somehow beyond it, not quite of this realm.

Slowly, a bud on the tree opens, and an M&M drops out.

"Well," Saturn remarks, head tilted consideringly to one side, "that should grow into a rather unique tree."

Ghost In The Graveyard

She wasnt quite sure what had drawn her here yet she found herself wandering the border of the graveyard. What she would admit to no-one not even herself is that she didnt even recall making her way here, her mind was blank and although this should have frightened her, this mysterious black hole in her mind she found it a soft and hazy comfort, almost as if something warm and furry nestled there, just out of her reach, a prescence she couldnt explain.  She hesitated for but a moment at the gate before opening it on creaking hinges.  The ground was soft underfoot and she walked slowly, hand trailing over the crumbling stones, eyes half closed as she listened, almost able to feel from each the echo of the person whom laid burried below.  Some brought smiles to her lips, others formed tears at the corners of her eyes until one, an ordinary one, made her gasp and she sank to her knees forehead resting against the cool stone, letting the echo of a life wash over her. A life she all but knew and remembered well.

I call out a tentative, "hello?" into the night and can see my breath on my lips as I do so. Was it this cold when I entered the graveyard? I can't quite recall but I shiver anyway. The wind picks up in response and the feeling of being watched intensifies. My voice is shaky this time when I call out, "I don't mean any harm I just...was playing a silly little game. Would- would you like to play too?" Can whatever is watching me even hold its breath? Does it have breath at all? "I could do with the company if you want...honestly being stared at is kinda creeping me out right now. So...please come play? Please?"

Magic filled the air, swamping the clearing with its weight.  The Swamp Queen lowers her head to the cauldron, breathing in the scents, the tastes of the spells.  And she knew.
She strides proudly, seeking again that bright glow, the deep connection that pulled at her.  In her wake is the spicy aroma of cypress and sage.  She pushes her head into Wildfilly's chest and imperiously lifts it again. Her choice has been made, and the magic has been accepted.

Ghost In the Graveyard

The feeling of being watched made her skin prickle and she raised her head, searching for the source. Evening was fast approaching now and she wondered idly how long she had been here, lost to the world in a world of her own. Finally she thought she could make out a shape in the dusk, an ethereal creature, watching her, waiting. She began to hum softly, a soothing lullabye for year ago, she wasnt even sure where she recalled it from.  Keeping her movements slow, she rose slowly, pausing, her eyes staying on the creature, the lullabye flowing freely. Slowly she moved forwards, closing the distance until, mere feet away she once more sank down onto her knees, melody trailing softly off as she gazed up at the mare in front of her.  'You look as alone as I feel in this place. Come, let me soothe your sorrow and mine' she whispered raising her hand up to the shadow and opening her heart. 'Be my companion in the darkness and the still of the night, while the moon shines on or hides its light' Once more the melody flowed, an outpouring of acceptance and reassurance.

Ghost in the Graveyard

The movement is from beyond the trees, then just behind the large statue of a weeping angel.  Then she stands there, ears back.  She has been lonely, here among the dead, and the promise of companionship, especially in the darkest hours, sways her to join the figure kneeling on the ground.  Hesitantly and carefully, she stretches out her neck to blow softly atop the head of BKC.  A walk in the moonlight would be perfect, and let's not forget the lullaby, the song of the night.


This was incredibly difficult to judge!!!  Ember and BKC both did phenomenal jobs.  Ember really captured the nature of the graveyard, the creepiness lined with life and hope.  BKC touched upon the sorrow of those who have gone before.  Thank you both so much for entering!!! I love your entries!!!
