[Horses] The mysteries of "Horse" breeding unraveled

Horses

Hi everyone, Silvanon here!  Sorry I've been absent the past few days (and thanks to Ethendil for getting the Quinsta breeding season going).  The reason for my disappearance is that I've finally made some progress on figuring out how "Horses" can breed.  It turns out that, being the magical creations they are, the method for breeding "Horses" is rather unconventional.  Each stage from egg (yes, egg) to adult requires a different substance to facilitate the process.

To start out, only "Horses" who share the same owner are able to breed.  In order to breed "Horses," you have to sprinkle special Gold Dust over a mare and a stallion you own.  The pair will then produce an egg.  You can tell the gender of the egg right away, since they have different shell colors.  Eggs can hatch any time after they are a full 5 days old (even a few seconds shy of the full 5 days won't work).  Once the egg is at least 5 days old, you can get it to hatch by sprinkling special Cinnamon over it.  When the foal hatches you'll be able to see the base body color.  All "Horse" foals have cloudy blue eyes, grey hooves, and no mutations or markings showing.  Once the foal is at least 20 days old (counting from when the egg was laid) you can help your foal grow into an adult by feeding it some special Sugar.

Where can you get all these special breeding items you ask?  Why, in the Horses Agency Store of course!

Now, you may be asking yourself how "Horse" inheritance works.  All "Horse" markings and mutations are recessive, meaning they need two of the gene in order to display.  All genes are on their own loci.  So, if you breed a normal maned mare to a puff maned stallion, the foal will get one normal mane and one puff mane gene.  The baby shows no mane, but it could produce normal maned or puff maned offspring.

If you breed a normal maned mare to a normal maned stallion, the baby will always get the genes for a visible normal mane.

It is possible for a "Horse" to have enough genes that than one mane mutation should be visible.  In that case, random chance decides which one is actually visible on the individual.  However, the individual keeps all its genes and can pass them to offspring.  In the future there will be other mutations that share a type, like the mane mutations.  Mutations that don't share types can be genetically and visibly present on the same individual at the same time.  So, for example, you can have a puff mane and floofy feet visible at the same time.

Color inheritance - when a "Horse" inherits a marking or mutation from both parents, there is a 45% chance the color will come from the mother, a 45% chance the color will come from the father, and a 10% chance the color will be a random mutation.

"Horse" eggs have a 50/50 chance of being male or female.

Let me know if you have any questions!

(Horse breeding has been fully tested and should be bug-free, but let me know if you run into problems.)

Silvanon

:)  Thanks, glad you guys like them!  And yes, actually, they'll stay foals until you feed them sugar, so they can stay foals as long as you like.

My colt is definitely a daddy's boy. Same coat coloration. =)

No longer has zombie eyeballs. May still have a craving for brains, as there's no intelligence or sanity left in hers. XD

Luv007

Mine's a mama's boy as far as coloration, but I'm hoping he'll pick up the design from his daddy.  I love the vines.

Keilin Alyr

Oh wow, I think I have the girliest male Horse ever. Remember that little white foal a few weeks ago?

Pretty pink sparkles! <3

Kahlira

Something about my boy's eyes freak me out just wee bit.

Your sparkley is gorgeous!

Mutt

Two out of my three look almost exactly like one of their parents except this girl, I love the poofy hair,

Keilin Alyr - I think my just randomly generated boy Mad Max wants to be the second girliest male Horse ever- http://www.secundi.net/critterpage.php?ID=530788 XD I love your boy's colors :3

Ryuukokoro

lol now you guys got me dying of curiosity! -runs to feed her baby-

Edit: Whoops not old enough yet. XD

Wildfilly94

Got a Plain Joe. But I like his toes :3

Scullisto

So I got no markings no manes...nothing.

very disappointed.

The top post says:

QuoteAll "Horse" markings and mutations are recessive, meaning they need two of the gene in order to display.

I think this means Horses work like the PI Generator? Breeding two parents with the same gene produces a visible s-gene in the offspring. Breeding two parents with different genes means the baby will be plain but carry both genes?

Keilin Alyr

They will carry their parents' genes though, so if bred to another carrier or visible parent the offspring might show those traits. Since all traits are recessive they won't be shown if both parents don't show or at least carry that trait. They aren't like the cream, dun, and roan genes, where only one parent needs the gene.

Better luck next breeding though, those are pretty coat colors. =)

Ryuukokoro

Since the babies are maneless, that must mean each parent had a different mane type. The hairless offspring could pass either parents' mane type to future offspring. :)

Goddesss

Hehehe I did the same thing guys.  Guess I should have waited to see how this worked first.

Though I knew after reading this this is what I would get when they grew.  I think this is a cool thing.

Luv007

Same here. No markings or hair.

I think I might breed one to keep as a baby. :)

Ryuukokoro

Mine's going to be the same way lol. She can grow tomorrow.

Oh I'm totally going to keep a bunch as babies! ^.^ I love the baby lineart!

Although I'm a little confused. Kahlira's baby has visible Clouds markings even though only one parent seems to have it. A glitch, or does the mom have "invisible" Clouds that are the same shade as the body?

Kahlira

There's a very subtle difference on the body and cloud marking, yes. I custom made that pair when the breedings were open. Just so I'd know I could have markings.

Ryuukokoro

Ahh I see! The mystery revealed! I can see the mom's marking now that you pointed it out, I had to look closely lol

Kahlira

Look closely or tilt you screen. *grins*

Yeah, When I made her I was like did I forget her markings??  Did they not register?? I so fail.

Keilin Alyr

Luv: You could always create him a mate with his parents' genes, that way you could still have colorful babies. =)
